Jacob, a ladder, and Jesus.

20 Then Jacob made this vow: “If God will indeed be with me and protect me on this journey, and if he will provide me with food and clothing, 21 and if I return safely to my father’s home, then the Lord will certainly be my God. 22 And this memorial pillar I have set up will become a place for worshiping God, and I will present to God a tenth of everything he gives me.”

Genesis 28:18-22

If…Then…

In his sleep he watched angels descend to heaven. Jacob did not have the ability to go up to Jesus. Jesus came down to Jacob and created ‘the house of God the gate of heaven’ by making his presence. Jesus came down to us as a baby. He came in human flesh. Each of us now is the house of God. He made his home, his tabernacle in human flesh. He now dwells within us. (1 Corinthans 3:16)

IF God provides for Jacob, IF God protects Jacob, IF he returns safely to his fathers home THEN the Lord will certainly be Jacob’s God.

Jacob does nothing to make the Lord his God. The Lord provided for Jacob, protected him, and returned him safely home.

In the same way we can do nothing to make God our God. He has made himself our God. He has created us. He has done the work to fix the relationship we destroyed. He has called us to himself. He has restored the relationship. He will return us safely to our heavenly fathers home just as He returned Jacob to his father’s home.

He restores

He reconciles

He redeems
