Marriage, Friendship, and Faith

At this stage of life I do not read very much fiction. Over Christmas break I decided that should change. I read a historical fiction book that is set in the area we call home and I read Soldier On by Vanessa Rasanen.

The story line is not one I would have been drawn to for any particular reason. It is about a military wife and husband. I know very little about military life. I picked it up because this ladies Instagram is so great. It is filled with books, fireplaces, whiskey, vulnerability, life with kids, emotions, adorable PJ pants, and coffee. All of these thing are things I love.

The story line may not be one I would pick up but anyone with a beating heart is going to fall in love with the characters and their stories. I’m not going to talk about the characters or the stories very much I do now want to spoil anything for you. I will say that, just like in read life, the characters are complex. The relationships they have are complex. The marriages, the friendships, and the faith that bind these characters feel real.

One thing I will say is I appreciate the depiction of the friendship between Piper and Meg so much. It is not as if they are in perfect sync at all times. They stumble over their words for one another. They may stumble but they stay and that is a beautiful friendship.

I guess I will say one more thing too. The way Vanessa depicts the prayer life of these characters is beautiful and real all in one.

I read this book it two days. I didn’t want to stop. I hope you pick it up and enjoy it as much as I have!

P.S. This is a book in a series and the next two are already in the works. And I can tell you I am so glad I get to meet these characters and get glimpses into their lives again.
